Madarao Kogen is, despite growing popularity, still just a small town, consisting of a cluster of restaurants on a main strip and a few large hotels, all within walking distance of each other located at the foot of the slopes.

Madarao & Tangram Shopping

Madarao & Tangram Shopping

Shopping is, as you’d expect from such a small town, relatively quiet here, with some of the larger hotels offering souvenir and gift items, a handful of convenience and grocery stores and one large shopping plaza. The large store sells a very large variety of Madarao branded products. The store is only open in the busier months though, from April to October and December to March, and is open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. or 6 p.m. depending on the month.

Madarao & Tangram Onsen Guide

Madarao & Tangram Onsen Guide

The largest and most popular onsen facility is, of course, at Madarao Kogen hotel, with guests at the hotel using the onsen for free and outside guests need to pay the onsen entrance fees to use the facilities. The onsen is high quality and is well kept, open from early morning to late in the evening, almost midnight most nights, and provides a soothing and beautiful environment for guests to relax in.

Another smaller and slightly more out of the way onsen is available at the Nakano Hotel. This onsen is an outdoor one, with a smaller bath but arguably a better environment. It’s closed every Tuesday, though, and costs roughly 450 yen for adults, and 300 yen for high school students. This onsen is open from around 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., with shorter opening hours than the larger onsen at Madarao. The natural surroundings of the outdoor onsen make for a stunning scenic relaxation session, and definitely provide tranquility that the larger and busier onsens lack.
